Summary: Patricia Presti. Searching for the most recent Canadian statistics can often be tricky for both librarians and users. Come and find our the most time-effective and productive ways of mining the Statistics Canada web site, and learn about some exciting new initiatives along the way.
Statistics Canada
The Statistics Canada web site was launched 10 years ago. Contains over 200 web pages providing access to 37,000 PDF documents
Presentation will be available on the web.
This jam packed session provided excellent tips on how to access statistical information from the Statistics Canada web site. I'm going to mention the first three which are excellent starting points.
Finding basic statistical information
Canadian Statistics Module is broken down by the most popular subjects. Start here instead of using the search engine. Very easy to use.
Canada eBook - this is the last Canada Yearbook from print form dropped onto the Internet. This is will be further developed over time.
The Daily - StatsCan sends out daily e-mail to subscribers (free) and highly recommended. There is also a searchable archive.
[Note: to self subscribe to e-mail service]
I would encourage everyone interested in this subject to print off the presentation and surf the Statistics Canada web site with it in hand.
Things to note:
2006 Census web page will go up on May 16, 2005.
http://www.census2006.ca/
This will also include job postings as well as providing up to the minute information about the Census and it's result.
Statistics Canada web site is in web design transition so you will notice that the site design is going to become more homogenized. Navigation will be changed as well as a new graphic standard.
CANSIM (fee based) - coverage extends back to 1914 but most data is from the 1970's forward. Specifically on economic and social series.
Online Catalogue of Products and Services - this is an excellent place to go for descriptions of Statistics Canada publications. It offers a keyword and advanced search. The results displayed do not display the actual date of the publication but the date that the record was updated. Be sure to actually view the publication itself.
Site Search - allows you to search for free materials only if you so choose.
BiblioCat - the library catalogue does link to electronic documents and may be easier to search than the "Catalogue" or "Site Search".
Historical Statistics of Canada - "contains more than 1,000 statistical tables on the social, economic, and institutional conditions of Canada from Confederation in 1867 to the mid-1970's."
Animated Tutorials - not very well advertised, these useful animated tutorials walk you through searching for statistical information.
Wow. 30 tips in 61 minutes!

A reminder that all the presentation URLs are in the NOTES view of the PowerPoint presentation.

Statistics Canada is pleased to announce a redesign of one of its key web-based modules, Canadian Statistics.
Canadian Statistics provides a selection of free statistical information on a wide variety of topics, from agriculture to wholesale trade. A search engine offers access to the data, which may be browsed by subject, by province or metropolitan area. New features include a more robust search engine, alphabetical and new table lists, print-friendly versions, adjustable font sizes, and related data recommendations.
